What microsuction is
Microsuction uses a gentle medical suction device, together with a magnified view of the ear canal, to clear wax under direct vision. Because the pharmacist can see exactly what they're doing and no water is used, it's considered one of the safest methods of wax removal. It's the method many NHS and private ear care services now prefer over ear syringing.
Who it helps
A wax build-up can cause earache, a feeling of fullness or blockage, dulled hearing, ringing in the ear (tinnitus) or dizziness. Some people produce more wax than others, and hearing-aid users and people who use earplugs are more prone to build-ups. If wax is the cause, removing it often relieves the symptoms quickly.
What to expect
- The pharmacist examines your ears first to check microsuction is suitable
- Using softening drops for a few days beforehand can make removal easier — we'll advise you
- The procedure itself is usually quick and most people find it comfortable
- You may hear the suction, which can be a little noisy, but it's brief
- Most cases are cleared in a single appointment
Never try to remove wax with cotton buds or by putting objects into the ear — this tends to push wax deeper and can damage the ear canal or eardrum.
