Adults aged 18 and over. If you fall outside this, we can still give advice and point you to the right care.
About shingles
Shingles usually affects one side of the body in a band or patch. Antiviral treatment is most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing, so it is worth coming in as soon as you notice it.
Symptoms and what to look out for
Common signs include:
- A tingling, burning or painful feeling in one area of skin, often before any rash
- A rash a few days later, usually on one side of the body
- Raised red blotches that become itchy, fluid-filled blisters
- Blisters that dry out and scab over after a week or so
- Sometimes a headache or feeling generally unwell
Not everyone with shingles needs antivirals; the pharmacist will assess this with you. You cannot catch shingles from someone else, but the fluid in the blisters can cause chickenpox in a person who has never had it.
When to get help urgently
Seek urgent help
Some cases need same-day medical assessment. Seek urgent help if:
- The rash or a blister is on the tip or side of your nose, or affects your eye
- You have a weakened immune system (for example from chemotherapy or certain medicines)
- The rash is widespread, or you feel very unwell
- You are pregnant
- The pain is severe or is not controlled
Shingles in or near the eye can threaten your sight — contact us, your GP or NHS 111 the same day.
What to expect from the consultation
You will be seen in our private consultation room — a room with a door, not the shop floor. The consultation itself is always free.
- The pharmacist will look at the rash and ask when the symptoms started.
- They will check whether antiviral treatment is suitable and started in time.
- You will get advice on pain relief and looking after the rash.
- If it affects your eye or you are higher risk, we will arrange urgent care.
If we supply a medicine and you pay for prescriptions, the standard NHS prescription charge applies — the same as at your GP. If you are exempt from prescription charges, it is free.
