The mandatory Meningitis ACWY vaccine
Saudi Arabia requires all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims to have the quadrivalent Meningitis ACWY vaccine, which protects against four groups of meningococcal disease. A large number of pilgrims gather from around the world in close proximity, which is why this requirement exists. You'll be issued with a signed certificate as proof.
The Saudi requirements specify timing: the vaccine must have been given a set number of days before you arrive, and the certificate is valid for a defined period. Requirements can change from year to year, so check the current rules with your travel agent or the Saudi authorities, and come to us in good time.
Other vaccines to consider
- Seasonal flu, which is often recommended for pilgrims
- Routine UK vaccinations up to date (for example tetanus, diphtheria and polio)
- Other travel vaccines depending on your wider itinerary
Polio vaccination may also be required for travellers from, or transiting through, certain countries — we'll advise you based on your circumstances.
