What it is
The New Medicine Service (NMS) is a free NHS service that supports you in the first few weeks of taking a newly prescribed medicine for certain long-term conditions. Getting off to a good start matters — side effects and worries are common early on, and they're a frequent reason people stop taking a medicine that would have helped them.
Who it's for
NMS is aimed at people newly prescribed a medicine for conditions including asthma or COPD, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and to reduce the risk of blood clots. If you've just been started on a medicine for one of these, ask us whether NMS applies to you.
How it works
- A first chat when you collect your new medicine
- A follow-up a couple of weeks later to see how you're getting on
- A further check-in after that if it's helpful
- Practical help with side effects, timing, and any questions — and we'll involve your GP if anything needs changing
