What Pharmacy First is
Introduced across England in 2024, the NHS Pharmacy First service means that for seven specific conditions a pharmacist can give advice and, where appropriate, supply treatment — including antibiotics or antivirals under an NHS protocol. There's no appointment needed and you'll be seen in our private consultation room.
The seven conditions and who they cover
| Condition | Who it's for |
|---|---|
| Sinusitis | Adults and children aged 12 and over |
| Sore throat | Adults and children aged 5 and over |
| Earache (acute otitis media) | Children aged 1 to 17 |
| Infected insect bite | Adults and children aged 1 and over |
| Impetigo | Adults and children aged 1 and over |
| Shingles | Adults aged 18 and over |
| Uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) | Women aged 16 to 64 |
What to expect, and the cost
You'll have a private consultation with the pharmacist, who will assess your symptoms and decide on the best course of action. That might be self-care advice, an over-the-counter product, or a prescription-only medicine supplied there and then. If your condition needs a GP or other care, we'll tell you and help you get to the right place.
The consultation is free. If you're supplied a medicine and you pay for prescriptions, the standard NHS prescription charge applies — the same as it would at your GP. If you're exempt from prescription charges, it's free.
